Beyond the Hype: What you can Really Learn from Kevin Pietersen
I worked with Kevin Pietersen for nearly 4 years on a day to day basis.
It was an absolute pleasure because he made it so easy. And so it was fantastic to get the chance to work with KP once on Keep Calm and Smash It.
KP asked me to work with him on his batting in April 2007. We already had a good relationship and I felt that I understood how he worked as a bloke and knew his game well from watching every ball that he had hit in the previous 20 months.
There were a number of things that stood out straight away when working with him. Things that are not often spoken about in the media but that I feel every batsman can learn:
- His incredible work rate and in particular his ability to work smart, concentrating on the things that mattered, the things that would help him improve and be successful for the team.
- That his un-breakable confidence came from ensuring that his preparation was 100% thorough:
- He was always in peak physical condition
- Simple approach to technique and fully aware of his own game
- Understood the opposition bowlers inside out through analysis
- Established tactics and strategies to cope with each bowler
- He studies the game and other players to pick up ideas and other opportunities to develop further.
Often, when KP was dismissed, he would be back sitting next to me within 3 minutes of getting out, watching the game intently and talking positively about other players, the pitch and what he has learnt for future innings.
I had never seen someone deal with getting out so productively and, in the online course, KP reveals his way of doing this and the rationale behind this approach. At the time I found it an unusual approach, yet I have used it to work with young plays since. It works.
Players then review and reflect appropriately, learn from rather than dwell on mistakes, rightfully analyse their strengths and good performances and the players develop at an accelerated rate.
KP opens up and lets you know all of his secrets to his success.
