Case Study Profile: Mike
Mike is a bowler in his 40s playing in Wiltshire. In days gone by he played at county 2nd team standard for the Army and is still taking wickets for his club. He plans to continue to do so in the coming season.
Mental Skills
As an Army man, Mike is efficient, focussed strongly on completing tasks with minimum fuss. He seems to know his strengths and weaknesses well, thriving on the competitive pressure of playing cricket. From his initial questions I suspect Mike gets everything he wants from playing cricket already.
One area I would like to explore further is when he reviews his performance. Currently he does this in the game. To improve performance he may be better off learning to drop mistakes and review them after the game. This will particularly help him make his practice more specific to his errors.
Fitness
Mike is still very active playing hockey, cricket and going to the gym regularly. He does core stability work which is rare for a club player but only once a week. I would like to up this to at least 3 sessions a week and add some more bodyweight style training to increase his strength and mobility.
Nutrition
There is, like many club players, an imbalance in Mike's diet. He eats a lot of carbohydrate heavy food (cereals, bread, rice and chips) at the expense of protein and healthy fats. On the plus side, he does not eat much processed food and has a healthy dinner every night with plenty of vegetables. I will see if we can get more healthy proteins and fats into Mike's diet.
