Combine Fielding Technique with Fun to Take Home Trophies
When I watch coaches take fielding sessions I see excellent activity, movement and enjoyment. Yet I would like to see this backed up by some coaching work.
It's great to see youngsters enjoying fielding drills. Fielding is a hugely important part of the game and we do it for the longest time within each game of cricket. Team drills all help towards facilitating better performance.
And when you combine technical coaching with team drills, there are more diving stops, more runs saved, more stumps ripped out of the ground, fewer injured throwing arms, less bruised hands, better catch and run out percentages, less overs bowled (so happier bowlers!) and ultimately; more team wins.
So why don't most coaches work technically with individuals?
Mostly because they don't have the confidence to do so. Coaches often feel bereft of the technical knowledge or understanding necessary to add value into someone's stop, throw or catch.
I want to help build this confidence.
First Class Fielding is a resource that helps every coach to fill their toolbox of fielding techniques. Then you will be able support any player on their quest to become a more effective fielder. This coaching resource brings together a huge number of best practice coaching examples taken from the likes of Peter Moores, Mike Young, Paul Collingwood as well as myself to give any coach more "ammo" to their fielding coaching game.

- Understand "walking in" where I challenge conventional wisdom.
- Discover why some fielders prefer the Australian high catching model, and others hate it.
- Master your own fielding delivery skills for high catches, low catches and slip catching. How can you expect your fielders to get better unless your delivery skills are top notch? Become a World class "nicker" and hitter by following my International tips.
- Follow the step-by-step guide to how baseball throwers develop amazing throwing arms that get better over the course of a competitive season: Throw further, flatter and more accurately in 7 steps
- Gain better slip fielders: Fielding has moved on so much in the last 30 years with one exception. Slip catching ratios are no different now to 1985. Let's learn how to buck that trend!
- Break down different throwing techniques to run out key opposition batters from a variety of fielding positions.
Let's talk about that last point.
Will all know "catches win matches". And I know run outs win trophies! Wes Durston helped me and my Somerset team win the 2005 T20 cup by running out Australia's Andrew Symonds with one stump to aim at.
It was no fluke. In fact, most of his team-mates knew the outcome as soon as Wes started to move to the ball. Wes practiced hard, he practiced smart and was well coached. As a result he produced the goods under monster pressure, on TV and in front of a full house at the Oval.
He bought home a huge trophy.
So, have "run out kings" throughout your fielding unit. You can teach this technique as well as all of the others by investing in your development as a fielding coach.
First Class Fielding is available now only on Pitchvision Academy.
