It's wicketkeeping all the way on the show this week as we catch up with Nic Northcote, first-class 'keeper and author of Wicketkeeping: The Ultimate Guide to Mastering the Art.
Nic gives his advice to listener Dan who emailed the following question in:
"Hey, I'm a 17 year old 'keeper who's been behind the stumps for about 5 or 6 years but had almost zero formal coaching. Everything I know is from match practise and watching the pros. I consider myself an able wicket-keeper but I know I need a lot of work, my main problem is my club doesn't offer any coaching for keepers.
I play 3rd XI in the Essex League most weekends but have been called up to the 2nds recently. I've been told I keep with "hard hands" and I think that's to do with rigid elbows and grabbing at the ball. What do I need to do to fix this and are there any drills I can do?
Another issue is my footwork. When stand back I don't get across enough, I collect the ball but often away from my body or over the outside hip. Also, if a seamer bowls a ball in at the stumps and it gets an edge, I tend to follow the ball and step across the leg, thus being in a really bad position to catch the ball.
When standing up I tend to take a step back when taking the ball. It's just an instinct and I'm trying to correct it by having a wide stance so that I can step across to stand up fully, instead of going backwards."
