CRICKET JOBS: Director of Cricket - Manchester Grammar School (UK) JOB CLOSED !

Filed in:

Closing date: Friday 20th June JOB CLOSED !

Following the appointment of Mark Chilton to the coaching staff of Lancashire County Cricket, we are seeking to appoint, from January 2015 (or earlier, if practicable), a Director of Cricket to lead cricket at The Manchester Grammar School.  The successful candidate will develop, direct, and implement a strategic vision for cricket at all levels of the School, to ensure that there is development of performance and widespread participation at all levels of the ability range.

They will be well-qualified to coach cricket at all levels of the school (Years 3 to13), while taking responsibility for the 1st XI squad.  The person appointed will be expected to make a strong contribution to the School’s extensive co-curricular sports programme throughout the year; the ability to teach Physical Education lessons and coach a winter sport will be an advantage.

Manchester Grammar School
Founded in 1515, MGS has a long and distinguished history. It has an international reputation for academic excellence, and a strong record of success with top universities both in the UK and overseas.

The School comprises over 1500 boys in Years 3 to 13.  All boys are assessed for entry on the basis of their considerable potential by observing their individual talents in imaginative lessons.  Our admissions policy aims to be needs-blind and we have substantial bursary support to enable the school to be a diverse community of talented individuals from all backgrounds.

Sport at MGS
Sport is extremely important at MGS and the School is very strong in many areas.  Our pupils take part enthusiastically and with success in representational sport at all levels, from “Friday football” form competitions, through to winning national cups.  We regularly win county competitions and have a strong record of success in national competitions; recent high-level successes have included football, swimming, water-polo, cross-country, rugby, squash and cricket.

Cricket at MGS is a very important part of the co-curricular sports programme and has an illustrious history, producing many international and county cricketers.  MGS cricket is thriving and we currently have fourteen teams, from Under 10s through to the 1st XI, which play fixtures throughout the summer term.  We have a very strong fixture list, playing fixtures on Saturdays against some of the leading cricketing schools in the country.  Alongside these block fixtures, cup games are played mid-week; we also have annual fixture playing Cheshire and the M.C.C..

The cornerstones of this vibrant sporting life are the contributions made by large numbers of enthusiastic and committed teachers from academic departments, and the leadership and expertise provided by coaching staff, many with a distinguished professional background.  At present the P.E department consists of eight full-time teachers.  Various members of the department have lead responsibility for major sports (most notably Heads of cricket, soccer and rugby).  There has been significant development of the P.E curriculum in recent years, with increasing and successful use of Assessment for Learning and a strong focus on pupils’ knowledge and understanding in physical education.  The P.E. curriculum is broad and balanced, offering all boys the opportunity to develop their physical skills in a variety of activities, from swimming to gymnastics.  This is backed up by an inclusive afternoon games programme, including the opportunity for rugby, football, hockey, cricket and tennis squads to train together.  Along with the squad sessions, activities such as rowing, climbing, badminton, squash, lacrosse and handball are offered to the boys.  In the Sixth Form there is a wide range of sports available within our enrichment programme.  In recent years the department has delivered a sports science course within the IB diploma programme, which is studied as an alternative to A-levels by some of our pupils.

The co-curriculum
The School has a deep-seated commitment to co-curricular activities stretching back over many decades.  We look for staff who will contribute passion and experience across a wide range of activities, from the intellectual to the sporting and the cultural to the adventurous, whether during lunchtimes, after school, at weekends or on trips in holidays.  In recruiting we place considerable weight on the co-curricular commitment applicants will make and would urge anyone with a passion in this area to apply.  Our website (www.mgs.org) gives some sense of the range of opportunities currently available, although we are always keen to support new ideas should a candidate wish to propose something fresh.

How to apply
Candidates of any age and any level of experience are invited to apply.  (MGS provides full support for NQTs so that they can complete their NQT Induction.)

The salary for this post will be competitive and will be discussed at interview. The Manchester Grammar School pays well above main scale rates.

Applications should be made by application form. Further details about the School and the post, along with a copy of the application form, are available on the school website (www.mgs.org). The completed application form should be emailed to recruitment@mgs.org. The closing date is 9.00 am on Friday 20 June and we expect to hold interviews shortly afterwards.

We would like to thank all applicants for their interest in the School and for taking the time to apply. However, please note that, because of the high volume of applications we receive, we regret that we are unable to reply individually to each application.  Applicants who have not heard from us by 27 June should assume that they have not been shortlisted for interview.

The Manchester Grammar School is an equal opportunities employer and we welcome applications from all sections of the community. We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and successful applicants will be required to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
