CRICKET JOBS: Public Affairs Assistant - ECB (UK)

A vacancy has arisen for the position of Public Affairs Assistant. Reporting to the Director of Public Policy and International Relations, you will provide administrative and operational support across a wide range of areas. You will support the Director of Public Policy in his work of helping to identify and manage key risks and external challenges to the organisation and overseeing the organisations corporate profile within Government and across key stakeholders. Central to this will be providing operational and administrative support for the ECB public affairs operation in researching and managing key issues to protect the organisation from regulatory challenges.
The role also requires working with the Director of Public Policy to build on our strong working relationships with Government Departments, Civil Servants, Lords and MPs both in the UK and where necessary in Brussels. It will also require helping to forge closer links with a range of external agencies such as: Sport England, Sport and Recreational Alliance, the media, National Governing Bodies and local authorities. Along with supporting the ECBs work with the 5 Major Spectator Sports Group and the Sports Rights Coalition Holders, to share best practice on key legal, policy and regulatory issues.
Job Description
ECB Public Affairs:
This will involve providing operational and administrative support across the following areas:
- Day to day monitoring of issues in the media and across Government.
- Building networks of key decision makers (Ministers, Advisers, Civil Servants and external stakeholders).
- Assisting on key policy interventions on regulation, governance and funding.
- Managing correspondence, briefing, speech writing, and Parliamentary debates.
- Representing the ECB at meetings where appropriate.
- Helping to research and draft Select Committee responses and research papers.
- Providing administrative support on key legislative areas across both Houses of Parliament.
Supporting our work across a wide range of issues covering among other things: tournament guarantees for global events, Government and opposition funding/spending plans on sport, broadcasting rights and coverage, touting, playing field protection, alcohol sponsorship, anti-corruption legislation, sports betting rights, police charging, IP rights/copyright, grass roots funding, tax relief for amateur sports clubs, School Sport policy etc.
ECB Public Affair Campaign /Promotional:
- Helping with the delivery of key events such as the Parliamentary Terrace reception.
- Delivering a programme for the Parliamentary sport fellowship.
- Assisting in the promotion of our key announcements and policy areas across Whitehall.
- Maintaining a close working relationship with the All Party Cricket Group.
- Managing visits of Cabinet/Shadow Cabinet Ministers to our venues and other key stakeholders.
- Creating a rolling presentation programme at local cricket clubs, involving county cricket and local MPs to showcase the grass roots investment at local clubs.
- Maintaining and building on relationships with other sporting bodies.
- Helping to collate analyse and produce key briefing material (fact sheets, external briefing material etc) covering all area of ECB public policy.
- Assisting in the promotion and running a number of key campaigns and events across cricketing venues such as ticket touting, responsible drinking or national/international commemorations.
International Relations
- Assisting the Director of Public Policy in the delivery of major tournament guarantees for the Champions Trophy and World Cups, across Government on issues such asvisas, security, etc.
- Providing support in helping to protect the ECB’s corporate interests within Brussels.
- Supporting the Director of Public Policy in managing potential issues around future UK and overseas tours of teams and managing relationships with the Foreign andCommonwealth Office and High Commissions.
- Helping to manage any overseas visa issues.
- Promoting our overseas work and helping to deliver CSR visits/programmes, diplomatic receptions and trade delegations around tours when required.
- Helping to support the international work of the Government’s GREAT campaign.
Community and Education Policy
- Providing operational support across our key target areas including delivery of our Sport England contract and promotional opportunities for key stakeholders within our Club network.
- Helping to build partnerships and manage Education Policy in the area of School Sport.
- Supporting the protection of funding, tax exemptions and playing fields across the club network.
Person Specification
Essential experience:
- Highly organised with first class administrative skills with a clear ability to manage a range of complex projects.
- A thorough understanding of public affairs and the workings of Government with specific experience of developing and maintaining relationships in a multi stakeholder environment.
- Knowledge and understanding of Cricket and the wider role it plays in the community.
Desirable:
- Previous relevant experience of working with or within Government organisations.
- Ability to help organise and run campaigns at national and local level.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively across a diverse organisation.
- Strong communication skills and an ability to deliver customer service across a wide range of stakeholders.
- Good understanding of how a National Governing Body is constituted and operates.
