Fielding drills: Catching ladder
This drill is part of the PitchVision Academy fielding drills series, for more in this series click here.
Purpose: To practice slip catching concentration under a pressure situation. And to have a fun game.
Description: The coach hits the ball out randomly to players in the line for close catches. Any fielder who drops the catch moves to the bottom of the ‘ladder’ (as shown on the left), everyone else moves up a place.
It's best to keep the number of catchers small (3-4) to prevent crowding, although more can play if needs be.

This is a great game that I love to play and feel really helps improve standards of catching. You can mix it up as well with having two rows of fielders in two straight lines, the first line simulating slip catches, the second line more in-the-ring style catches. with 4 on the front and 5 on the back (in the gaps between the front men)
I agree, it's simple and effective. Where I don't like the drill is when the whole team get involved and it becomes a free-for-all with little focus on skill development. It's just a mess about then. I know that has it's place, but if I'm teaching skills I would rather not have 10 other guys crowding round trying to catch one-handed and the like!
