How to Become a Professional Cricketer
So you want to play professional cricket.
Congratulations on setting your goal. Now the work starts.
This guide will talk you through the practical and philosophical basics of becoming a professional cricketer. Your location will vary the specifics slightly, but the basic principles still apply wherever you are in the world. 90% of what you do to become a cricketer in India or Sri Lanka is the same as in Australia, England or anywhere else.
There are also some helpful links through the article to give you some more reading and advice. So get stuck in and get to the nets.
Make the most of your chance
The first thing you need is honesty: Are you really good enough?
There is no getting around this one I'm afraid. You need a basic semblance of ability to make it to the top. While there are many ways to maximise what you have (see below), you need something special too. Be realistic with yourself and your talent and set smaller, more achievable goals at first, even if your big ambition is far away.
You don't have to be amazing right now - although it helps if you are - but you do need to think that you might be amazing at some point. If that's true, then what?
- Practice all the time. You know the law of 10,000. It's not hard and fast but the idea that you need to put in a lot of practice is true. The earlier you start the better you can play and practice. There is no substitute. For drills, check out PitchVision Academy online coaching.
- Be pushy. If you are working hard at your game and producing results you deserve to be noticed. If that isn't happening you can push yourself into the limelight. Ask your coaches what you need to do to get to the next level and keep coming back to them when you have done what they asked. Jut do it in a polite way.
- Get mentally tough. Cricket can be won and lost in the head probably more than any other game. It's essential to learn the techniques to make your mental toughness and will to win as well developed as your cover drive (or googly). Study and practice this element relentlessly until it is part of your make up. You need to be able to bounce back from failure, win ugly and ride the wave of success in equal measures. That takes time but you will be playing so much you have plenty of games to hone the skills.
- Find a mentor. A mentor is an uncommon thing in cricket but it can make a big difference to whether you can make it or not. Mentors can not only help you (and how much they help is up to you), they can also argue your case for moving to the next level. Find someone you trust and admire and be confident enough to ask them their opinion. Most people love to talk about themselves so listen to what they say and see what you can learn.

Pathways to the top
Every country has a "pathway" to professional (and international) cricket. If you want to become a cricketer, it helps to understand what you need to do to move up through the system. The best way is to ask someone in the know in your local area. Adminstrators will tell you all about it. But to illustrate, here are some pathways in the English system:
In the UK, cricket is run by the ECB. There are 18 fully professional county clubs that can take you on.
Club cricket
Below the county level there are local leagues. The best of these are called Premier Leagues and clubs are run semi-professionally. As you move lower down the levels, fewer players are paid until it it totally recreational.
Most clubs are affiliated to the ECB and players join the clubs (usually at a junior age). If you are good enough at your junior level your club can put you forward to play at a higher level. This usually means representing your region within the county at ages 10-18. If you are good at this level you can represent the county at age group level.
The best players are mostly playing first eleven club cricket and regular representative cricket by age 16. These are the guys who will look to get into County Academies: The youth scheme all professional counties operate. Once you are in that system you are well on your way.
Older players can still make it though.
Good performances at senior club level or in the minor counties (non-professional representative cricket) can be rewarded with a county trial well into your twenties. The older you get the less likely this is to happen. That said, there are outlier cases of players making a professional debut even into the late 30s. Don't bank on this. The earlier the better.
Additionally, there are many clubs who employ players on a short term basis as player coaches or paid professionals. Not many players can make a career of this but there are opportunities for good players not quite good enough to make it at first class level. You generally need to contact clubs directly to be considered and you will need a substantial track record at club level to have a serious chance.
School and University cricket
School cricket is less popular than it used to be, but many schools have a fine tradition of cricket and if you attend one of these, such as Millfield, you have access to cricket coaching and personal development that is extremely good for your game. However, most people in England don't get a lot of school cricket and rely on the club game to develop.
The good news is that whatver your cricket at school, you could attend a University that has been allocated as an MCCU. Currently these are Cambridge, Oxford, Loughborough, Durham, Leeds/Bradford and Cardiff/Glamorgan). Naturally, you need enough academic ability to get on a course, but once in place you can play a high standard and get spotted for a county through the University competition.
It's worth reiterating here that the English system is unique but not so different from other countries. Everywhere with a professional level has some form of club cricket and some level of representative cricket where you are picked based on ability. If you get runs and wickets consistently enough at one level, you can move forward to the next on merit, and that should be your take home point.
Becoming an "overseas professional"
If you want to play professionally in the UK and you are based in another country it's a lot more difficult. You will need a work permit and to play county cricket that means having played at International level for your country of birth (although there are some loopholes).
More realistically is working in the UK as an overseas player for a recreational club. There are many clubs looking for good overseas players but most go though agencies like CricX for them. If you are of professional standard in your own country consider contacting a decent agency as that is the fastest route in.
Ther is also the backdoor of University cricket.

I am 22 now and I will most probably go to Cambridge University for my masters. I have a deep passion to become a professional cricketer but never really got any time to join a club or something as I was too busy in academics. So how can I proceed once I reach Cambridge to become a professional cricketer ? It is not that important that you missed out this year Michael. What is more important is that you know why you missed out and what you need to be working on.
Guys at your age develop at different rates and, to be honest, it is no better to be the fastest or the slowest to develop. If you get a growth spurt, you may not have adjusted to the longer limbs and change in centre of gravity. If you have not yet started to sprout, you may find that others are stronger and more powerful than you.
Keep working at it, keep improving and keep trying. Make sure County know you are there by turning up to all the District matches and being consistent. If you can afford some one2one coaching with the County coaches, that may help a lot too... keep going to trials and I am sure you will make it!

My son is 7 years old and we are in California. Around 2 months back he said he wants to become cricketer. I didn't take it seriously in the beginning but he didn't give up. He just come with the bat and forced me to play cricket with him. I have been playing cricket with him for last 3-4 weeks and noticed the talent he has. He is a left handed batsman. He has 3 D's - Discipline, Determination & Dedication.
We have CCA(Cricket coaching) in California and last week was his first training class. He was very excited. The moment he started batting against coach's very simple bowling, he impressed the coach and some of the parents there. The coach said, "All left hand batsman, please watch this kid and see how you should play". His footwork was as very good and some of the shots are coming out like Sachin. He likes to watch some great shots on the youtube and try to repeat.
I know Cricket in USA has some limitation in terms of resources. Please advice me how I should move forward.
BTW, I was good in cricket when I was in college. I was very good all-rounder and played up to district level. With less resources and financial hardship I had to just focus on study more.

My advice is that at 7 years old the level of coaching he most benefits from will be directly from you, not from a coach. You say you played a bit, and Im sure you were schooled on technique...
Just play with thim alot, help him develop his general motor skils and reflexes (this means playing more than one sport).. and gently school him in proper technique. Give him these to foundations - motor skills (or you could say athleticism) and basic techique and what you will find is that he will blossom of his own accord around age 12.. and it really only at that point that he would benefit from specialist coaching.
Some people might say that at 7 you dont need to teach technuque but i really believe that is rubbish; of course you do. Thats like saying you dont need to teach a 7 year old table manners. The thing is a balance; you should teach him table manners , you just dont have to teach him how to eat lobster!.. so just keep it balanced, make sure he plays sports that give him differnt challenges - eg make him run fast, help him learn how to fall, help him learn to be brave, how to deal with failure and recognise the need to work hard when things are a challenge, help him learn to dive, to stretch, to throw... and Cricket alone isnt the best way to embedd those skills in young body.
Yes, you want to harness all thatcorss-training to a specific end point/outcome in improving his Cricket, so maintain that as a goal, and continue to be the enthusiastic Dad you obviously are. I'm grateful to my parents for putting me in teams from age 6 (played under 15s at 6): and there's nothing wrong with helping your son by giving him a focus and helping him stick to it... just remember that at this age he doesnt need fancy schmanzy coaches or big resources : he needs the textbook basics , he needs to play healthy competitive games.. and he needs you or a good basic coach to encourage and chide him in the right way.

I was born in India and I have been playing cricket since I was 3 years old. I strongly believe that I have it in me to make it to the top. I am currently living in a country where cricket barely exists. I am 18 years of age and I currently reside in Toronto, Canada. I know there is a lot of competition. But I heard through someone that if I could join a club in Toronto and if that particular club makes it to the top then I may get a chance to go to the U.K. and play a series there. I am not sure if that is a fact or not. What is your say on this? Hi admin. Very informative posts indeed. Ok here is my situation. I'm an international student here in UK and doing 1 year masters program. 23 years old. and i believe i'm a very talented cricketer. Cricket is my biggest passion. Is there any way that i give trials for county cricket here as i just have a year's visa. or if there can be any other possibility for me to stay and prove my cricket in county level? I'm a 19 year old, British born Pakistani. I currently live in Scotland (Edinburgh) and have played at a range of levels here including East if scotland u14's, u16's and North of Edinburgh u17's.
I believe i've been very successful here and proved my talent and passion time and time again. However I personally, as well as many otherm, feel that there is some racism amidst the Cricket Scotland set-up (even white British cricketers admit to this).
I was taken on tour to Ireland and ended up fielding for 40 overs having not batted or bowled a single ball.. on the flight back home I was told by the young coach that I was going to be left out of the upcoming main tournament of the season. A couple seasons later I fractured my thumb and temporarily had it in a cast so could not attend the annual team indoor trials. Since then I have been kept out of recognition or any opportunity to be recognised for my talent and abilities.
Also I am a leg-spin bowler - which is this part of the world isnt very common or playable - I spin the ball big and have a couple variations and have taken many wickets with best figures of 7 wickets for 14 runs from 7.4 overs.
I am frustrated, slightly angered and am losing hope... and I'd appreciate some advice on what to do.

How are you doing, I hope so ur well. Yes, here is my doubt. Im singh from India came to UK in sep 2009 to do MBA. Now it's finished and applied for 2 years of work permit visa. As you said earlier if anyone wants to play for county immigrants should have work-permit visa...? I don't have any certificates of academic cricket in India tho Im very much Passionated person for cricket. I want know what I can do for become a profession I meant couch can observe more than what friends usually says about us right. I am 29 years old and I am an all rounder, I used to be just a batsmen but I have improved my bowling, and my confidence when batting and now I open the batting and either open the bowling. How can I get picked for my county team (India) and then how can I continue my career from there? Thank You.
I am going to be frank here, to both the poster above and probably 99.9% of the others who have posted here. If you are not playing professional cricket or at least in a professional set up by the time you're 21, it is very, very, VERY, unlikely that you ever will. It is even less likely that you will play international cricket.
I don't want to rain on your parade but you have to be realistic. I can think of maybe a handful of players who have been picked up by a county after the age of 25. Even then I would wager that most, if not all had been part of a county set-up during their teenage and early adult years.
Yes, we all love stories of the underdog but come on, do you really think that at 29 you are going to be selected for your country out of the blue?
While there is always a chance, there is a time to be realistic and ask how big that chance has become.
You put it in friendlier terms than I managed.
I understand that things are a little different in India and Pakistan but still, it is very rare to players to pop up out of the blue. Talent is often spotted at an early age and nurtured. A lot of time and money is invested in players during their teenage/early adult years - this is often why it is harder to get out of the system than into it.
I just think posters on here need to be realistic - aim to improve your game by all means. However, don't think you're going to find yourself playing for your country if you've reached the age of 29 without ever playing professional cricket.

Shadab, it isn't completely impossible. If you are coming to England to go to University, you might be eligible to play for the University team - the University Centres for Cricket Excellence play First-class matches against the counties as well as within their own system. If you're good enough, that might attract interest from the counties, but unless you were qualified to play for England there is a disincentive for them to take you on as it would take up their quota of non-Qualified players.

Hi david,i am a allrounder who can bowl legspin and bat right handed.i could bowl pace in nets which would be around 95kph(58mph)(iam 17) which means i am the quickest bowler in nets.i can bowl legspin verywell but still i haven't reached my potential in my batting.i have all textbook shots and some unorthodox shots to play perfectly but still i fail in the batting recently.what could i do?and also do you really believe the guys who post that they bowl around 125kph-140 kph being a 14-17 years old are telling the truth?.i can only tell that these guys are absolutely crackpots who could struggle to bowl 80kph.trust me i haven't faced anyone over 85mph.i faced 80mph in machine and i am still good enough to bat against it.if these guys are around 135 kph,they would be playing higher cricket.i need your tips david to improve my temparament.

Just a few questions on the desired action for a leg spin bowler. Would it be a positive thing if you bowl with a braced front leg as a wrist spinner? And how can you stop "catapulting" the ball when your bowling? I know a leg spinner that drags his bowling arm straight down to his thigh in his action and it loses any momentum and as a result he "catapults" the ball without any pace or spin, he would like to know how he can fix this (are there any drills that he can use or any other method)

I can bowl at my peak at 75mph
and I bat at 3 to 6
I've represented my areas borough cricket and regional cricket both opening bowling for last year U14
This is the pathway that you get into county :
- club
- borough
-regional
- county
I preformed really well at club and county level where at my club I got the most wickets and my highlights were as a U14 playing in the U21 league and in 8 matches I got 21 wickets and 51* highest score and in borough I got 8 wickets in 3 matchs and only batted once where i got 32*.the regional teams are the same as borough teams But in regionals I underperformed and managed to get only 4 wickets in 4 matches and I batted twice my scores were 25 and 7.
I didn't get into the county because of this underperformence
I'm looking for another chance to get into the county but I'm not getting one. So please can you show me a path to take because I seriously believe that I'm good enough for my age group U15 county cricket .

My son is 5 and has been playing cricket since he was 1 (no lie we have the videos). He's a pretty good player. I want to get him in to it more so he has better options when he's older. How do we get to the stage of getting him to play for more recognised groups. I know it's early but just looking at options.
