Help Coach trying to change technique

Im a 19 year old wk/batsman who bats at the top of the order for my club side
recently my team has got a new coach who has been trying to change my technique in order to create less movement while i wait for the ball, currently i have a set up similar to that of shane watson were i have a forward press just as the bowler goes into his delivery stride I have had this ever since i started playing, but ive been told this is wrong and that i should have the bat on the ground, since he has implemented these changes i have become more static and struggled to get forward or back like i used to. Personally i would like to get back to what i had but im not sure what do u guys think i should do ?

The forward press should be used against spin bowling while the back and across should be against quick bowling. I think you should talk to your coach and tell him what works and what does not work for you.

Where are you from Savage? it would be bizzare to try and make such a big change at this point of the season if you are in the UK.

I would agree with the coach that pressing forward is a bad idea, but I wouldn't try and change it at this point in the season. As you say, it feels wrong and it will take a long time to get it to feel right. Maybe in the winter you can work on it, but for now stick with it unless it is causing you a serious problem.

What is your form like?

A coach should only ever change someone's technique if it is completely clear that the specific technical element he is unhappy with is directly at fault for a loss of performance.

So the question that needs to be asked is: are you getting yourself out in ways which can be attributed to a forward press? For example, are you getting out lbw because your forward press is making your play across your front pad? Are you struggling against short and quick bowling because your forward press is inhibiting you from getting onto your back foot quickly enough? There are probably other potential symptoms he may or may not have noticed.

If the answer to either of these questions is yes, then you should listen to your coach over the off-season as he may be able to help you out and boost your performance for next season. If the answer is no, then ask him why exactly he wants to change your technique and put forward the argument above.

It should go without saying that the last few games of the season is not the time to attempt to remodel a technique.
