Bowl well in nets, bad in matches | |
This has been a problem which has been happening for a couple years now, I only realised recently, and it's just pissing me off so much. In the nets, I'm real quick, accurate and bouncy, and always bowl well. It's like I can put it whereever I want. But in games, I lose it. Not fast, not much swing, the ball just sits up. The only way I can bowl accuratel is if I slow down and don't hang in the air with the action. I changed my action about a year ago to increase pace, and it worked, at least in the nets. So irritating because I don't know WHAT to do to change this, I can't just go to the nets. |

It's a common problem.
I wrote a bit about it here: What is perfect cricket practice?
In the article I advise players with this problem that it is a mental nto a technical block. You will focus on mental techniques to improve your game and also do lots of "realistic" practice (middle practice, open nets, practice games, play in knockabout games where there is less riding on the match) with less traditional nets.
Does that help?
This is a common problem as David said. 9 out of 10 calls to sports psychologists are of something of this nature. There needs to be a time in the game when you need to let your trainings take over i.e your instinct take over. Do all the planning in the nets and let the trainings help you in the game. It is easier said than done of course but with practice you will be able to separate conscious and sub conscious if you are an experienced player. If you are starting out or not experienced enough, with experience you will understand how to go about doing it.
If you are doing well consistently in the nets, then try and recreate the feel you have in the nets outdoor. Once you have figured out what ball you are going to be bowling, sing a song in the mind while running in or anything but worrying about the outcome of the delivery. Then trust your body to do the job considering it has been doing it often in the trainings.
Good luck.
