Quick Tip: Be Specific to be a Better Cricketer

Filed in:

We get a lot of questions at PitchVision Academy. Every one is welcome, but to help us help you we need specifics.

For example, I was recently asked if I could recommend a coach in a certain area. I was happy to do so, but needed to know more about the player. Things like age, standard, skills, experience and how much he is willing to play. So I asked these things and here was the reply:

"batting and bowling"

I want to help, but what can I do with so little information?

I passed him on to a list of coaches in the area. I hope he finds what he needs.

But the wider lesson is this: Be specific when trying to improve.

Getting a coach is not about booking a session with someone local, going along and - as if by magic - becoming a cricketer. Just as going to club nets and having a hit will do very little for your skill as a batsman.

You need a purpose and that means being as specific about things as you can get.

If it helps, write down exactly what you want to achieve. The experts call it "outcome visioning", but it's really just a destination on a map. You need to know where you are going if you are going to get there safely.

Think of it this way: What looks better, a suit off the peg or one that has been tailored to you with precision?

Your cricket career can be that tailored suit if you are specific.

Hi David,

I agree with you that a player must be specific about his game. One can usually achieve expertise in one department. There are very few players till now to have about equal abilities in both the departments. Like Freddi was exceptional but a better bowler than batsman. Kallis is amazing but a more reliable batsman than bowler. Being an all rounder is good for you and your team, but you should know what is your USP. It helps to retain your confidence and form at crucial time.
