Quick Tip: Take Control of Practice

Filed in:

If you want your practice to go your way, you have to take responsibility.

One thing I often see at nets is the default having a hit: One person batting for 10 minutes with no purpose, and a range of bowlers. A good coach will do all she can to prevent this from happening but in a group setting it doesn't always work as planned.

So, you need to take a moment before, during and after the session.

  • Before the session, decide what you want to get done, and perhaps how you might get it done.
  • At the session, keep your goal in mind and if it's not working then speak to whoever is organising the session. Chances are they can accommodate you.
  • Avoid complaining or getting angry. Adapt as best you can if your plan is not working as you hoped.Group training is not always easy to get everyone working the way they want.
  • After the session, review how it went. If you did the work you needed to do, did it help you? If you didn't, did you adapt?

You might be the type who responds best to measured training, competition, or simply feel. You might have a routine or go with the flow. To expect a coach or captain to handle your needs as well as everyone else is tough, so take it on yourself instead.

You'll be surprised how much more you get done rather than just having a hit.
