Quick Tip: Make the Coach Redundant
Two of the best new drills I did last year came from players.
The five most improved players in my team from last year came up with their own solutions to problems.
What does that tell us?
For me, it says a few things,
- No single person has all the answers.
- There is always something new to learn.
- A different perspective is as important as vast knowledge.
And ultimately it means this; the job of the coach is to become redundant to the player. At least as a "traditional" coach
Because that means cricketers are solving their own issues and understanding their own game.
Every coach will have plenty of work to do even as they strive to create self-reliant players. Younger players need basic advice on technique and tactics to get started, older players are look to have a sounding board, fresh idea and someone to throw with the Sidearm.
But when there is an "player centered" environment where players and coaches understand themselves, understand each other and are always looking to find their own best way, your world is a successful place.
