Stick to your cricket resolutions
Have you resolved to have a better cricket season this year?
In the UK it's a great time to start working towards that goal as indoor nets start across the country. You have enough time to get stronger, fitter, faster and more skilful before you even face a ball in anger.
But just as 90% of people who resolve to get fit in January give up, you might find yourself overwhelmed and unmotivated.
Instead start your year with these 5 simple ways to stick to your resolutions:
- Keep it real. Before you do anything, take a look at your resolution. Is it realistic now? Will it be realistic when you are ill and depressed in mid-winter? If it doesn't fit the SMART criteria then readjust your aims. It's better to aim low and overachieve than to miss out and give up.
- Learn what to do. Read up on all my "Complete Guides" and go through the archives. Subscribe to harrowdrive and look at my links section. Buy a book or two from Further Reading.
- Have a plan. Once you have a realistic idea what you want and how to get there plan it out. Where will you be in a week, in 6 months and in-between? What do you need to get and when do you need to get it? It doesn't have to be in intricate detail, but you can't get anywhere without a map.
- Get some coaching. Indoor schools across the country will be happy to spend one-to-one time with you. It's worth the investment as the few tips you can pick up in a couple of hours with a professional coach could make the difference in the coming season.
- Make a commitment. Be it financial or social, a commitment helps your motivation. So get a training buddy, join a gym and buy some new fitness gear (don't hide it in the cupboard). Put a big poster on your wall saying you will train today and tell all your friends and family you have committed to getting fit in time for the summer.
And most importantly...
- Just do it. When it comes to the crunch it's still up to you to keep yourself going up to the start of the season. Use whatever tricks you can to get you off your bum, and go for it.
You might even surprise yourself when you get to April a stronger, faster and better player.
Happy New Year!
